If you find yourself walking down Centre Street and see a giant crowd, it’s more than likely outside of Fantastic Fudge Amelia Island FL. For over 30 years, locals and tourists have been satisfying their sweet tooth at this sugary oasis.
And if the crowd doesn’t sell you, the tantalizing smells of fresh waffle cones, ice creams and fudge certainly will.
Steven Colwell, owner of Fantastic Fudge, bought and renovated an old hardware store for his sweet shop. The old brick walls on the inside and giant windows on the front helped retain the small town vibe that flows through Amelia Island.
Grab a number when you walk in and wait to be called. This system allows you to explore the inside of the shop without having to wait in a line–but seriously, grab a number or you’ll be waiting a long time.
As far as the fudge goes, the classic ways are respected at Fantastic Fudge. The fudge is heated in a giant copper kettle, poured onto a marble slab, paddled into a log shape and cut into fudge slices. Make sure you try to Chocolate Peanut Butter with a gooey peanut butter core.
If you ask locals about Fantastic Fudge, they will almost certainly talk about the ice cream. The ice cream is from Working Cow, a Florida based ice cream maker that exclusively uses Florida dairies. The dairy is all free of growth hormones and high fructose corn syrup, which yields a simple and old fashioned style of ice cream that will remind of you of simpler times.
One local sitting outside said Fantastic Fudge is a family tradition.
“This is definitely a regular stop for our family after eating dinner down here,” he says. “We love to just get ice cream and sit outside and people watch.”
The sweetness certainly doesn’t stop there. Other treats that are available at Fantastic Fudge include:
- Caramel Corn
- Salt Water Taffy
- Rock Candy
- Jelly Beans
- Assorted Chocolates
There’s always room for dessert at Fantastic Fudge.
